Tony has been spending his summers with BTSV since 2019 — he was an Instructional Coach and Dean of Faculty for four years before joining the team full-time as the AmeriCorps Program Director in 2023.
Tony manages the AmeriCorps member experience from start to finish; recruiting up to 10 full-time members and 50 minimum-time Teaching Fellows every year, planning their training and professional development, and providing support to members’ managers.
Tony started his career as an AmeriCorps member himself, serving two years with the Citizen Schools teaching fellowship. In this role, Tony was a mentor and provided academic support to middle school students in Redwood City. Tony then began his teaching career at a charter school in East San José, and next spent six years teaching 6th grade math at Summit: Denali Middle School.
Tony grew up in California’s Central Valley and is a first-generation college graduate from CSU Stanislaus, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Sciences.
Tony is a runner and is usually training for an upcoming half-marathon.
“My favorite part of my job is mentoring and training young people who want to explore teaching and youth development, especially those who have similar lived experiences to our students. I especially love seeing the students show their appreciation for their Teaching Fellows at the annual end-of-summer celebration.”
