Sophia joined BTSV full-time in 2025 as the Middle School Program Coordinator after spending three summers as a Teaching Fellow, where she taught math and a dance elective to rising 8th and 9th graders. Sophia also gained experience in youth development while serving as a Big Sister for Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Luis Obispo.
In her role, Sophia advises a cohort of 7th and 8th grade students, helping them establish positive academic habits, explore their extracurricular interests, and develop confidence in themselves. She also plans student and family workshops, field trips to local colleges, and community-building events. Over the summer, she is the SJUSD Dean of Students, taking her back to where she first started at BTSV!
She earned a B.S. in Psychology, with minors in Ethnic Studies, Equity in Education, and Gerontology, from Cal Poly SLO, and is currently pursuing an M.A. in Human Rights and Educational Justice at the University of San Francisco. She’s originally from Santa Cruz County and currently calls San Francisco home.
Sophia likes to unwind by taking walks and watching reality TV.
“My favorite BTSV memories come from the end-of-summer celebration where Teaching Fellows have their last opportunity to share their appreciation and well-wishes for the students before they transition into the next grade. It's a bittersweet event filled with community, reflection on the work of the summer, good food, and happy tears.”
