Sergio is from Eastside San José and is a first-generation college graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, where he majored in Sociology with a minor in CalTeach.

Sergio started his career as a BTSV Teaching Fellow for two summers in college before moving back to San José after graduation and teaching Math and Spanish at Summit Rainier and Luis Valdez Leadership Academy for seven years.

As the Middle School Program Manager for FMSD, Sergio provides 1:1 academic advising to students, including supporting 8th graders as they explore their high school options. He also designs the math curriculum for the after-school program and serves as the Dean of Students at BTSV’s summer program, where a highlight is taking students on a field trip to UCB.

In his free time, Sergio is an avid hiker, board game player, and a San José Sharks and Quakes season ticket-holder.

“As a Teaching Fellow, I appreciated the program's ability to blend learning and community-building. This allowed students to come out of their shells and grow both academically and socially. As a staff member, I love being able to see students confidently start the school year off strong after their summer with BTSV.”
