be Part of Our Homework Center
What will I do in the Homework center?
Tutoring at Breakthrough Silicon Valley (BTSV) involves working with an assigned student one-on-one to answer questions, review class material, prepare for tests, and develop effective study habits. We especially need tutors in math, science and history, although expertise in all subject areas is welcome.
Note: Tutoring is not offered on a drop-in basis; instead students and tutors commit to a regular weekly schedule. Volunteers are paired with a student (or more if interested) depending on their availability and the subjects in which they are comfortable tutoring.
Who can be a tutor?
We encourage high school (10th grade and above) and college students to apply, but also welcome other community members familiar with the key subjects needed. We seek tutors for various subjects, but especially higher level math, science, and history.
Who will I be working with?
Our student population consists of motivated 7th-12th graders students from schools in San Jose Unified and Franklin-McKinley School Districts.
When and where?
Tutor applications are accepted on a rolling basis. This Fall, the BTSV tutoring program will be offered both virtually and in person. For the virtual tutoring program, students and tutors will work together online during their allotted hours. The in-person tutoring program will take place at one of our Breakthrough offices. One office is located at Hoover Middle School (1635 Park Avenue, San Jose, CA 95126) and the other is located at Bridges Academy (1702 McLaughlin Ave, San Jose, CA 95122)
Tutoring is offered once a week at each location. Available tutoring hours are from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm; the first session begins at 3:00 pm, and the last at 6:00 pm. Tutoring will be held on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. The minimum commitment required is one hour per week on a regular basis for three months; the full semester is preferred. The tutoring application will prompt you to indicate preferred days and time frames. In addition, all new tutors will need to attend an orientation.
REQUIREMENTS
If you are 18 years old or older you will be required to complete a background check prior to tutoring. If you are younger than 18 years old, a background check is not required. Further information regarding the background check process will be sent out once the Tutoring Coordinator has received your application. Again, the minimum required commitment is one hour per week on a regular basis for three months; the full semester is preferred.
Upon receiving your application, the Tutoring Coordinator will be sending out a BTSV Tutor and Confidentiality Agreement Form that must be signed in order to begin the pairing process of tutor
