Become a teacher
“As a former Breakthrough student, I understand how hard it is to have this community where students can be themselves and discover who they want to be. As Breakthrough teachers, we get to work with students who work hard and do amazing things.”
Alejandro Serrano, Breakthrough teacher
A core part of our mission is to train and inspire outstanding students to become teachers, leaders and advocates for education. Our formula is simple. Our students are highly-motivated kids with big dreams. Our teachers are enthusiastic, passionate high school and college students who want to make a difference. Mix in high expectations and a celebration of learning and you have the Breakthrough spirit.
In both our summer and school year programs, all classes are small, with fewer than 10 students per class. All teachers are trained and supported by dedicated educators, some of whom are former Breakthrough teachers themselves.
Summer Teaching Program
With its “all day, every day” eight-week commitment, Breakthrough’s summer teaching internship is a life-changing experience for students and teachers alike. Unlike many other summer jobs and internships, Breakthrough Silicon Valley truly values the leadership and creativity of our teachers, empowering them to plan lessons and lead all program-wide events. Nationally recognized for its impact, our summer program launching point for future educational leaders and a meaningful way to make a difference in the lives of student.

After-School Math Teaching Program
With just eight weeks in our summer program, our Breakthrough students continue to need academic support during the school year. We recruit outstanding high school and college students to volunteer as math teachers, reviewing algebraic concepts and homework with our middle school students. As with our summer program, classes are small and our students are highly motivated. Furthermore, we provide all lesson materials and our staff closely supports teachers in the classroom so that they can make a real impact.
In the past, our math teachers have also earned community service credits, applied this experience towards service learning projects and included this position as volunteer work experience on their resume.
